Introduction

Corrosion is inevitable in the lifecycle of a gasoline generator due to the significance of individual components. Any such generator set used should service and maintenance be performed frequently. Non-performing of generator maintenance would possibly lead to generator failure on demand.

Since the availability of the generator upon power breakdown is very important for businesses and in homes, early detection of problems in the generator can prevent the loss due to generator failure.

In this post, we are going to see what is generator maintenance, what are the basics that matter when it comes to maintenance and why it is required to perform maintenance for the generators.

Generator Maintenance

What is Generator Maintenance

Generator maintenance involves performing frequent tasks to make sure that the generator is readily available during the power breakdown. Effective generator maintenance is very significant as installing it.

Such tasks can be checking the battery, checking the engine oil, checking the fuel system, checking the air filter, checking the recoil starter, checking the spark plug and checking the electrical connections, and testing the generator.

Basics of Generator Maintenance

When it comes to checking the battery (if the generator is big), start the generator if it doesn’t turn over easily or turn over at all, we should be checking the battery to make sure it is fully charged at all times hence frequent charging of the battery and checking the proper output voltage is required.

Next check the engine oil, most modern generator now has an oil level sensor hence the oil sensor will not allow the generator to start if the oil level is very slow. We should be following the manufacturer’s recommendation in the manual on how often we should change the oil.

To avoid the corrosion by sediment at the bottom of the generator fuel tank we shouldn’t fill the fuel tank unless we need it. We recommend storing the gasoline separately. Check the tank filter and fuel line connected to the carburetor that they are in good shape and not leaking.

To make sure the air filter is clean we should wash it with soapy water and rinse it well then dry the air filters and reinstall them. And replace if the air filter is damaged.

Checking the recoil starter involves making sure it is not frayed or damaged, and it is secured.

Make sure that the spark plug top has no corrosion and check the plug has no wear or corrosion if not service it.

At last, we should check the electrical connections and test the generators. This can be performed by checking the connections between the fuel solenoid and the starter, if there are no damages, fill little fuel, start the generator and run it and make sure it runs smoothly. Plug any equipment into the outlet of the generator to verify the generator’s performance. And turn off the generator, drain the fuel tank and keep it in a safe place.

Why perform Generator Maintenance?

Usually, we install a generator as a backup plan and keep it until the next power breakdown. However, not only to get the maximum utility of the generator and smooth functioning of the engine frequent maintenance of the generator but also would lead to detect or identify the potential issues in the generator such as fuel and connections hence maintenance is essential to avoid the time and money loss.

Conclusion

Though the depreciation of the generators is unavoidable, a proper frequent maintenance plan and performing adequate tasks could help the generator to be in mint condition. Understanding what is generator maintenance and the basic tasks of the generator’s maintenance can prevent us from potential defects, costs, and losses due to the generator failure during the power breakdown. Effective maintenance of the generator could lead to efficiency in the smooth running and long lifetime.
