Generator Installation

When your power goes out, you need to weather the storm with your family in as safe of a manner as possible. Even if you are locked up tight with your family, there are some safety tips to keep in mind to remain safe until your power is restored.

  1. Always have a charged up smartphone on hand, so that you can stay plugged into the news and happenings that may be related to the weather and the power outage. If your power is out for an extended period of time, be mindful of draining your phone’s battery by using your phone.
  2. In order to avoid damage from a power surge, unplug items that may be affected and damaged, such as microwaves, computers or TVs.
  3. Understand the components of your home’s electrical panel and the areas that each circuit breaker corresponds to, so that you can flip a switch or replace a breaker if needed after your power is back on.
  4. Have a kit on hand that includes battery-powered flashlights or lanterns along with back-up batteries. These are much safer options to see than lighting a whole bunch of candles, which do not produce much light anyway.
  5. If you venture outside after the storm, watch out for any damage related to the power outage, including flooded areas, debris and fallen wires. Contact your utility provider if you see any damage to utility poles or wires, so that they can be addressed safely by an expert technician.
  6. Be careful when running a portable generator as they can leak carbon monoxide if they are not vented properly. Portable generators should not be placed in an enclosed space with limited ventilation. You also need to have a properly rated extension cord to operate your portable unit. Portable units should not be wired into your home’s electrical system.
